Sania's dress code
by Sanjeev on Sep 17, 2005 11:54 AM   Permalink

Most of the people who have written here have urged the columnist not to give publicity to the maulvi's fatwa. But the point to be noted here it is not only the maulvi but also an organisation like Jammat e hind which is behind this. Now they have threatened to harm Sania if she continues to dress the way she does.

This is one more way of bringing in religion in an unwanted domain. Now if Sania decides to change her dress code, the whole thing will be viewed as bowing down to the pressure of these groups. This will only embolden them to issue more such fatwas on women.

How can a young girl like Sania continue to play well if she is under constant threat by these fringe groups all the time? Common sense should prevail upon them that in this day and age one should be allowed to dress the way one wants, especially when playing sports.
