50% reservation for women
by Raghavendra on Sep 06, 2005 12:35 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Dear Mr shenoy
your concluding statement about 50 percent seats to be reserved for woman has many implications.first it would mean that all boys who fall in open category would continue to struggle for a descent college even if they have good marks.
reserving seats be it for caste or women makes no good because in reality the deserving candidates never get to enjoy them.Reserving seats only makes a particular category lax since they feel assured abt their future.
i believe reservation should strictly be based on income.in this way we can in some way help the "deserving" candidates.Instead of teaching women to fight onpar with men,by reservation we are making them more weak and dependable..not on men but now on system!

Raghavendra,
The issue is not about "deserving" candidates. It is about social equality. Which is sadly lacking in India. I mean female children are getting killed in our country ( by one estimate, a million female children in the last decade). Providing reservation for women is a matter of correcting the balance of power - so that women live and don't die. It is about putting power in the hands of an oppressed gender that faces discrimination consistently.
It is really appreciable that you show concern about women becoming "weak and dependent" on the system. I wonder what you think women's position is, in our society? Did it occur to you that they may prefer to be dependent on the "system" than on men? By the way, how independent do you think you are, from the system?
You think they cannot think for themselves? They are perfectly capable of maintaining their "strong and independent" position. I
