A dirge for New Orleans
by Reena on Sep 02, 2005 05:29 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

That was extremely well written.
All I am pretty sure of is that if a disaster like this were to happen in Bangalore or in Mumbai, the cities and people will simply be abandoned. The citizens will be left to fend for themselves. India can boast about a lot of things but it cannot handle catastrophes even remotely close to this. Half an hour of rain in Bangalore, and the roads are flooded. It is extremely scary.......The reason why we Indians have survived so long is simply because the heavens have been kind to us.

Nice try that heavens have been kind to us. To refresh ur memory, let me quote the "kindness of heaven to you' :
1. Earthquake in Latur/Osmanabad
2. Earthquake in Gujarat
3. Tsunami havoc in south
4. Landslides in North
5. Floods in Bombay
6. Severe droughts in North

So do you still call heavens as friends of India? Well we did have our sad moments.

One more thing: Based on the above situations, I can say with atleast some veracity that Indian govt cares for its citizens. Had the govt not intervened, cities like Nagapatnam, Latur, Bombay etc would have been obliterated to dust.

Here's something that's been doing the email rounds:
It may be a bit jingoistic...but the facts are worth noting...

Inches of rain in New Orleans due to hurricane Katrina... 18
Inches of rain in Mumbai (July 27th).... 37.1

Population of New Orleans... 484,674
Population of Mumbai.... 12,622,500

Deaths in New Orleans within 48 hours of Katrina...100
Deaths in Mumbai within 48 hours of rain.. 37.

Number of people to be evacuated in New Orleans... entire city..
Number of people evacuated in Mumbai...10,000

Cases of shooting and violence in New Orleans...countless
Cases of shooting and violence in Mumbai.. NONE

Time taken for US army/National Guard to reach New Orleans... 48 hours (by some reports)
Time taken for Indian army and navy to reach mumbai...12 hours

Status 48 hours later...New Orleans is still waiting for relief, army and electricity
status 48 hours later..Mumbai is back on its feet and is business is as usual

USA...world's richest and most powerful nation
India...a 'third world' country...which is, of course, a terminology invented by Americans

Reena, the US has not handled its own disaster well- nobody is praising the American relief effort, least of all the people of New Orleans. The US is the world's richest and most powerful country, so you cannot compare it with India. What this disaster has shown, as if proof were really needed, is that the US has a very backward( poverty) and brutal( behaviour of army, police) underside.
