So what is wrong with turning green?
by Ramiah Ariya on Oct 14, 2005 08:05 AM   Permalink

With forest coverage dwindling, ground water going down, water wars breaking out, drought conditions prevailing again and again, what is wrong in turning green?
The arguments seem to be split between:
1. Industrialize fast, do not worry about irreversible damages to the environment, do not worry about inequality and social unrest, do not worry about farmer suicides, large scale layoffs and do not worry about making life unlivable for the vast majority of the poor - let them die. Decision making will be top down and centralized. Put up with this kind of industrialization and soon we will all be rich. Wait for the trickle down...
2. Regulate industry with concern for the environment, involve local people in decision making, create social security net, do not pass environmental laws for pleasing corporations, make transitions manageable for the poor and involve them in economic decisions.
I would go with the second argument. We atleast need to realize that the second position is the ideal, and the communists are closest to that position. Economic development is useless if decision making is centralized (corporate friendly) and the environment is not cared for.
