Euthanasia should have wider application
by Cogito_ergo... on Jun 14, 2005 09:04 AM   Permalink

I have two acquaintances, both with mentally retarded (yes, "mentally retarded": I don't want to use mealy-mouthed euphemisms) sons, now about 40-y old. Needless to say, they can't take care of themselves. After their parents die, what will these two do? I am extremely suspicious of private organizations that may offer to take care of them for monetary considerations. What care will they get?
I am bringing this up, because, in cases like that of Terri Schiavo, the overwhelming majority opinion would be in favour of euthanasia -- the Courts of Law also ordered it -- but in the case of mentally retarded persons, almost no one will allow it. The situation cries for discussion by enlightened people.
