Advani DID NOT say Jinnah was a secularist. What he said was that the vision of Pakistan, that Jinnah outlined in the speech to the constituent assembly on Aug 15 1947, is of what we would call a secular society. There is no question about this, and Advani was not saying something unheard of. It is, however, something successive generations of Pakistani leaders have tried to suppress. I\\\\\\\'m astonished that the Pakistani reaction to his speech, which would have been iconoclastic for them, has been mild and even welcoming, while our reaction is so barbaric.
