Then and now
by A.H. Venkatachalam on Jul 13, 2005 12:52 AM   Permalink

Did they not unite our country? In the name of reorganisation, have we not vivisected it? The roads? How good they were in Britisher's time? What is the present condition of roads in India? They used our manpower to the optimum extent? What do we do with the enormous manpower we have now? Corruption was not so much prevalent during their period. What do we have now? They ensured punctuality and discipline in Govt. offices and private companies? Are they not missing now? They recognised merit irrespective of caste, creed and religion. What do we do now? We blame them for dividing us. Now, there are divisions, sub-divisions and innumerable sub sub divisions among our countrymen. Along with English, other languages also thrived during British regime. What is the position of our languages now vis a vis English? If they were violent, we are more violent towards ourselves now. The amount of respect that Gandhiji enjoys in their country is much more than what he enjoys in his country of birth. It is an irony. Was educatioon this much costly during their period? Professors were highly respected and were erudite scholars who evinced personal interest in their wards.
