India should always keep its energy options open
by Pradip K Mazumder on Dec 28, 2005 12:51 AM   Permalink

Once I saw in a press conference: when Bill Gates was asked about his interest in being America's first person, Prez Clinton retorted that Bill will loose his freedom for doing things if he accepts the proposal. So doing any business with US will necessarily be subject of verifications of various groups with counterposing interests and diverse perceptions. Therefore, India should obligatorily keep in mind the alternative options for her energy requirements including Gas/China/France /Russia /Turkey. That's why strategically India needs to make a flexible middle- east strategy independent of its relations with US. Every nation has its own agendas and perceptions so as US and India and intrinsically this relationship is destined to make noise owing to occasional friction of interests. I am not advocating any mistrust or suspicion, however, I am envisaging a roller coaster ride while evolving a steadfast relationship with US, world's only superpower with its inherent mandates, pronouncements and international obligations. While India is emerging as a power in Asia, its energy requirement is increasing at a fast speed to feed its economic engine and should not bother Washington much.
