1st of all, my observation: In every state(barring kerala/gujarat) the largest city (the capital) is atleast 5 times bigger than the next city in the state. compare mumbai with pune or nagpur, chennai/ coimbatore, banglore/mysore, kolkata and I am not sure of another city in west bengal, hyderabad/ vishakapatnam, chandigarh/ludhiana, and list goes on. this also contributes to the urban/rural divide in the country. any development is mostly concentrated in the cities and other areas neglected. the biggest reason for this, I feel, is the location of the state capitals in those cities. all major industries want to be close to the government, most infrastructure is concentrated in the capitals. the people in the state governments intuitively want to develop their own residential places rather than their constituencies. most of the state policies are in tune with this idea. all the people crave to work in those places. i am not a journalist, but i suggest that some one look up statistics regarding what I pointed out. Now for my suggestion: Imagine Nashik, warangal, madurai, belgaum forced to be state capitals. I feel that the centres of development in each state wud automatically shift.
