INDIA, THE MURDER CAPITAL
by Sujan Saraswati on Jun 19, 2008 10:53 AM   Permalink

I have two opinions on this issue, one probably, in the past also, we were at the top of the global crime list, but because of non-participation of media, the crimes were not coming into light. Mostly the crimes and punishments were negotiated in rupee terms. Probably, in villages, the situation is still the same. Murders are committed but do not get included in the statistics. Secondly, in South Africa, influential people have to hire armed guards. In India, if one is influential, he is provided guards from the taxpayers' funds. We have some deshsevaks, who in the past got exposure to the media through their not-very social deeds. Take the case of Phulan Devi, she was not only a Hon'ble Member of Parliament but also was nominated by a political party of national stature. One could not recite the deeds (I can not call them crimes) she committed, because it will amount to contempt of an Hon'ble Member of Parliament. Strange concept of democracy.
