Oscars
by on Feb 26, 2007 10:18 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

There is a Hindi slang for the way the Indian English media and more prominently the Indian English internet media promotes Oscars....and that slang is 'chatna'. C'mon folks...get a spine. Oscars is for Western movies made by Western people for Western audiences. If we patronize those movies its just added bonus for them....why are these rediff and DNA and TOI people making so brouhaha over Oscars. Hindi movies are made by Indians for Indian audience....for better or for worse. Stop measuring them by a yardstick that is not applicable. This is not to say that Hindi movies are great but you rediff folks really have to overcome your bloody colonial hangover. Feel good about yourself, feel self assured and don't try to look for recognition from blokes who cannot understand you.....like the academy awards people. Sham on you....the desi English media, shame on you for the way you belittle yourself. You really think our country should have a seat at the global high table then its high time we people stop losing sleep over a so-called lack of recognition from the Western world on every sundry issue. Pusillanimous editors at the Indian English media....you really ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Ignoring the Oscars shows our inability to appreciate quality and merit. And who gives one the right to say that the Oscars are for the west, many of the Indian multiplexes show English movies regularly and the most funniest part is that the so called Bollywood movies are half of the time entirely based on an English Flick. The worst part is that the Indian directors cant even properly remake it. Check Salame-E-Ishq the Director says "vaguely" inspired by "Love Actually"..have you any respect for such hypocrites..at least I dont.
Moreover Oscar celebrates absolute merit...just have a look at the major acting nominations this year. Most of the actresses are way above 50 and are there bcause of their merit not because of how less cloths they wore. Look at the category of the best actress in Filmfare, it invariably includes some 25 yr olds who cant act to save their lives.

I have just one phrase for those who ignore the oscars.."SOUR GRAPES"

In marathi they say "Kolhyala draksha ambat" i.e. whatever you cannot get you start ignoring or start hating. This should change. Like many other fields, India doesn't exist on international map (e.g. sports, films etc). We must be proud of Indian culture but at the same time try to stand international competition

i dont think the oscars are only for western ppl, the term western is used just for the so called Americas - US,Canada etc..Oscars are universal, when we have mexican directors, colombian actors, spanish, german ppl winning , why cant Indians?? IN the end its our problem and no ones elses..Water was supposed to be an Indian film but so called " Indians " refused to let them direct it here,so it became a Canadian film..and reached the last round whereas RDB and Munnabhai didnt even make it.. I think we need to get rid of this mindset that the Western world wrt movies are diff from us..movies are universal, if others can win, y cant v ??

The reason why we cannot win is... as an indian movie there is only one category to compete and that would be "Best foreign film category" whereas a western movie can compete in all categories like best director, best actor, best music.... etc., and that is how we see more of western movies winning more awards.

Man, I understand your point. Do you really think that Bollywood's 'Oscar' is worth mentioning where everything is distributed almost equally no matter how you perform. Dont forget in this dias they have showered honour on a great Indian Mastero - Satyajit Ray for life time achievement where Our 'great' Bollywood could not recognize this legendary. Dont forget this dias has given the opportunity to us to show it to the world that we Indian can also contribute to the world of cinema which transcends geography, language, race, and religion. So dont blame yourself being Indian.

Hear hear... I agree with you.
Oscar is by west, for west. One category of "foreign films" is just to make it look global.

We should really not worry so much about it.
But your Hinglish new media is a different story, the dance to the tunes of firangs, even now.
