I applaud the malayalam cenema. They make very meaningful movies and use actors and actresses not based on just looks. Unlike the Tamil movies where the actresses these days are imported from Bombay just for their looks while the actors are allowed to be ugly.( male chauvinism)

I am a Malayali, but I beg to differ dude.
When you say actors are allowed to be 'ugly', what do you mean? Some Tamil actors may not fall in the category of chocolate Bollywood heroes with peacock beauty, they look handsome to a large section of the people.
Most importantly their attitude and behaviour off screen are much better than their Bolly counterparts. They are more human and down-to-earth.
Attitude and behaviour are a much more endearing factor than good looks but with an attitude that stinks

The point I am making is, when it comes to heroes we are taliking of attitude behaviuor etc. When it comes to actresses how come the same criteria does not apply? That is what I ment by male chauvinism. I really feel sorry for the tamil girls being left out because they dont fall in the category of "peacock beauty"

Good point, but actresses tht ar now famous only b.c thy make a good pair w/a famous actor and hence only looks count.
Present actresses in tamil cinema shud learn not to do those useless good looking, dance arnd the hero roles, wearin skimpy clothes and have no solid role what so ever.
Because tht demeans status of woman, and might as well apply the strip bar scenario to these actresses.

Wrong, tamil actors ar very good an infact better than telugu actors in terms of acting, looks does not matter in south indian cinema as far as actors are concerned, or a muscle body.
Actress, i admit in tamil cinema have seen a a dearth, but we have good actresses i.e padmapriya, priyamani, bhavana which get full lead roles w.scope as opposed to being their for hero's sake and couple of songs-dance.
Asin, trisha, nayantara have all been used as dolls and no characters wer written for them, evn though thy acted in sucessful films w/big actors.
So now ther ar balance of really good "actresses" and not just dolls, so tamil cinema is improving and we can def. see writers and directors getting good roles for ladies.

I have no problem with actors not falling into any defined category. But the same should apply for actresses also. If you have a tamilian based household in a story does'nt it make sense to have a tamilian girl also. I know occassionally you can import based on the story line. But this seems to be the norm in Tamil movies.
