Wean away from oil!
by shiva on May 27, 2008 07:05 AM   Permalink

The steps outlined are short-term to secure oil supplies. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. We are not tough enough nor do we have the clout with oil exporters or rather others can easily beat us to the game by the time we wake up! US & China will get their way by the time we agree to disagree!

We spent $100 billion for oil imports last year. That was when oil was cheap at below $ 100/barrel! One of our own hit the headlines saying oil can hit $ 200/ barrel. Let us not lose heart, but make an all out effort to go for clean energy. Japan is making great efforts in this direction. By joining up with them & others, we should also try for clean energy sources like solar. We should make all-out efforts for electric cars, two wheelers etc. Japan is already making headway for going 500kms per each charge. It is easier to produce grid electricity from alternatives than for individual cars etc.

Solar is not yet cheap, but can solve the energy issue once & for all. In fact, each country can be rid of this oil dependency which results in raping nature instead of harnesing the bounty. Each remote corner can harness the source and even make it as a cottage industry.

No doubt we are under the oil grip for now. But we ahould try to untangle the coil rather than be no-hoppers. There is no cartel yet for solar energy like as in oil & nuclear! In fact, we should take the lead as not only we, but the poorer countries can benefit from the bounty of sun!
