I dont understand how come the so called intellectuals cannot think on long term, if all the agriculture lands are been acquired for industries India will no longer be a agricultural country. even after 60 yrs of independence so many families still survive coz of this lands, if the comapanies really want to take the country ahead use the waste land not agriculture lands. In the current situation the peopel are not having enough food and if the fertile lands are used like this then the day is not far when there will be no difference between indians and somali. All the people who feel roti is the priority among "roti, kapada aur makan" should oppose acqusition of agriculture, fertile lands all over India, as these acqusitions are done by the brainless polticians who donot bother about the people or the country.

dear sudha,
but we should not forget that without starting new company / factory, india cannot become a developed country. And tata is not using this land for their own profit, they are making the car for lower middle class people and i think it is good attempt.

Please understand.. the amount of land needed for industry is way smaller than that needed for agriculture.. we need both no doubt and they surely can coexist...
nearly all of land in India is under agriculture so to start any industry land needs to be acquired. This will not affect agricultural output of the country as the land is pretty small w.r.t that under cultivation.
We need development and the farmers who need to be relocated must be sufficiently compensated. If we fail to compenste them sufficiently we must not aqcuire their land. But the irony is even when compensation is proper, petty politics make it impossible to aqcuire any land

What has India gained by being agricultural economy. The returns per acre is nothing when compared to insustries. Please go and see how China has developed. Other than depending on rain and suiciding due to debts, the life of a Indian farmer has been pretty difficult. It is time we moved out of our agricultural mindset. The displaced people will be well of economically working in the car factory at Singur.

Sudha,
I fully agree with your thoughts. Only the thing which I don't know is..whether land in Singur is fertile or not. If it fertile, no way we sholud use for industrialization. With this we shall starve for food after some upcoming years and shall be depending on other countires for food. Same thing is happening in Maharashtra. We have agriculture minister with his back support many projects are coming on the fertile land near Pune and Raigad districts. Why they can't develop the areas like Ahmednagar and Sholapur where over the long time rains donot come and agricultural development do no happen? They should certainly use that part for industrialization.

If farmers get good value for the sale of their land....then why not......moreover most of the land in india is fertile for agriculture.....then where will the industries go...........Chinese economy was almost equal to Indian economy in 1965.....however today they have left India far behind......industrialisation is a major factor in it
