subsidies for farmers are required - but not this way
by raj on Jul 02, 2008 03:58 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

farmers want a regular water supply - but we build canals cos the construction of canals will give enough funds to be pilfered by the politicos. instead build small bunds and lakes all over the country.

teach them drip irrigation, rely on themselves not the government - but the politicos want farmer to rely on election manifestos and be at their whims. cos they need a vote bank.

farmers need to rely on less pesticides and fertilisers with modern techniques. they wont do it - cos the farmer then stop relying on the "system" that politicos built.

farmers need immunity from vagaries of nature. in the days to come we'll see less forests and more el ninos and floods and natural disasters. but these natural disasters will only drive the farmers to the political class.

its a systematic trap set by the political class. we sit on the sidelines and comment.

to cite some wasteful examples. i was in interior karnataka near shringeri - there was a small bridge built which costed some 80k then. funny thing was that the bridge was never opened until the politicos came to open the bridge. the cost of the minister' tour was 4.5 lakhs. thats stupidity we have in india.

another example - people in a village of koteshwar got fed up of politicos promising forever. and they cleaned up a tank themselves. people worked in shifts.

the other example somewhere near/in bihar, where a railway station - built, manned and run by the villagers themselves cos the railways thought the village couldnt afford them 50 tickets a day, and running it wasnt viable. for the villagers - they dint have any access by road, unless they travelled a great deal by foot.

accountability is key. and pressure by people is a must. at least know how abt whats going on around is a must. we are complacent. which is why we deserve a rotten bunch of politicians and cops. unless we demand better - we wont get anyone better.
