The first para talks about a Person who commited faux pass accespting a counter offer. however this cant be a Rule all the time. But In IT industry there are few Golded Rules whic must be followed by all no matter what.

1. never accept counter offer
2. Dont Curse your manager in public.
3. Dont do job hopping :) three years in one company is must .

1) One should upgrade & negotiate with current company rather than having offer and negotiate. It is better not to accept counter offers.
2) yes correct.
3) I don't agree with this. If one gets good work env. and work with benefits in the company he should stay there for long time. Rest no fun in staying at same position. I have seen people join new company to have better exposure in new role or technology and better package to afford better life. Many people with the same company and same project are not easily adaptable to new envorinment, people and technology and becomes lazy/dull sometimes. They become old resources of one project and doesn't get upgraded. also when the same person looks opportunity outside he doesn't have good things in his profile and market always ready to take more competitive and upgraded people with high package because that delivers better solution to customer and demand of the time.

Agreed to first two points. While third point depends on how the company environments is? how does career moves? what are salary structures ?

It Industry or any other industry works on the basis of demand and supply. If you are worth the value you would definately be appreciated.

But in case of you begin in a company for more than 5 years the value decreases as the attitude of company becomes laid back on you.

The company hires people with the most competetive salary in the market and you see that the people with lesser experience are begin paid more even though you have been loyal to the firm for the last 5 years when it did start as a mid size company.

Change is the law of nature and one should change.Getting job is like selling your skills and the person should always look out for the highest bidder(Salary/Stablity/Growth)
