Multinational management and IIMs
by Prakash Desai on Oct 16, 2007 06:17 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

In connection to my following post.
What if their customer does not have financial capacity to buy a product?
They arrange finance for customer. All automobile manufacturers in the world are ready to give you FINANCE (!!!!) if you buy their product. one more example. All the aircraft manufacturers (civil aviation and defence both)sell their products to near bancrupt countries with the help of their corrupt politicians. They make a deal to sell, then they also arrange finance to buy also!!! (finance also from so called multinational banks of their own country)And under such circumstances, who has capacity to bargain for price?
And for consumer products, they just lure customers by providing finance and useless features
And when you buy with such EASY payment terms, you lose your capacity to bargain for RIGHT PRICE.
This multinational culture apparantly has come to our country, yes. But indirectly, it was always there in our country- for generations- financially strong people always exploited others.
This type of business management or thinking has nothing to do with education or curriculum of IIM.
Exploit others, is the only culture of so called successful organizations all over world.
And I am of the opinion that professionals participating in the above mentioned IIM Calcutta meeting are just trying their best to make our IIM graduates become more compititive
And I do not see anything wrong in it.
Because, for hundreds and thousands of years, the world has looted us

So, as long as business is concerned, particularly multinational companies, where our IIM professionals get jobs with excellent pay packages, it has nothing to do with our IIM curriculums.
In fact, once they are in the job, they do not have any say or power. Only their professional capabilities are used to follow and make stronger the philosophies of those companies. Even if we change the curriculum and even if we make our IIMs world number one institutes, still the professionals coming out will never be policy makers, but they will always be policy followers. And not being in a policy maker role is not their problem, because, the policies are decided by shrewd money oriented culture of ALL multinationals who are ruling the world for years.
No single individual has that capacity.
Even if a particular company employs ten or twenty IIM graduates, still, all of them together will remain policy followers.
Except, dynamic management like Ambanis or Tatas or Birlas or Ruias (and many other indian houses) give them FREE HAND, only then they can show their real talent.
Otherwise, with non indian companies, forget to change the world.
And at the end of day, they must take care of what they get in their pocket.
I would rather suggest that our country must go for atleast another ten more IIMs and twetyfive more IITs. PRODUCE PROFESSIONALS. Let them get jobs all over the world. And then in another ten years, only indian professionals must rule the world.

Are our IIMs overly US-centric?
