kirana shops and small merchants have been ripping off the indian consumer and the farmer for decades now. It's high time the face the heat and get some competition. Lower/competitive consumer prices end up creating disposable income for the middle class which in turn is a big engine for the overall economy.

Exactly! When the prices of onions rise, then what are these crooked Left-wing politicians doing to provide price relief? Are they telling these kiranas to stop their price-gouging? Nope, because the politicians are corrupt cowards. The consumer matters more than the seller. My money, my choice, my right -- not yours, kiranas.
