The suspicion (and possible hatred) towards Japanese was because they militarily attacked - and hurt US ego big time - and it was also the WW2 period.
Indians started appearing - in big numbers - in 60s...mostly via the F1 route; in the late 80s it was via the H1 route and family sponsorship route. Most consider US as an economically sound place to earn well, save well and enjoy life from a materialistic view point. A large %age of people still have their hearts/minds in in India.
This scenario will get "diluted" over the next 2 generations, like the Italians or Irish, who have no personal touch with anyone in their homelands, but do visit their countries of origin when they can afford to.
