ROOT CAUSE OF MUMBAI's PROBLEM
by Doob Doob on Aug 02, 2007 05:41 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

The author and most other authors on this subject who are non-maharashtrians,
keep mum on the fundamental reason for mumbai's woes and that is uncontrolled
migration of non-maharashtrians into mumbai.

these migrants now form 75% of mumbai's population and 85% of slum population.
Every day nearly 1000 people land in mumbai from other states.so population equal to that of kolhapur is added to mumbai every year.
It is their uncontrolled migration that has brought the city's infrastucture on its knees.
The city was never designed for 2 crore people.for 1 crore people the city has enough infrastructure.

if migration had been controlled in the 60's today mumbai could have been saved, but
politicians ( read cong-i) relied heavily on non-maharashtrian votes in mumbai all along.it was their bread
and butter, so they did not have the guts to curb migration. more the migration the better for them..
so even talking on this issue became a taboo.

non-maharashtrians already settled in mumbai also keep mum on this issue because they do not
want to see mumbai's door's closed to their kith and kin in their native states.
so the only voice of protest comes from maharashtrians who are now a minority.

As long as UP/Biharis/Tamils/Keralites/Bangladeshis catch the next available train to mumbai, our problem
will not be solved, whatever experts might say.

i always hear this baseless argument from maharshtrians that people from different states have spoiled mumbai but that is not true. Look at delhi which also has a big immigrant population but noone in delhi compains about it but maharashtrians are always crying about it- this whole brain wash is done by Shiv Sena who dont want to improve infrastructure rather blame people from other states. Mumbai is the financial capital of india and it belongs to indians and not maharashtrians. I dont know when we indians stop fighting between us :-)

delhi does not have 75% of its population of outsiders. mumbai does. so mumbai's problem are more severe.besides sheila dikshit too criticised migrants recently and blamed them for delhis problem.you can't hide from the truth that uncontrolled migration is root cause of mumbai's problem.infratructure is unable to catch up with the speed at which population grows.
migration proves that the states from which the people migrate have failed to take care of their own people.
do maharashtrians migrate en-masse to other states ? we dont need shiv sena to tell us whats happening to our city.

if you think that migration is because that state has failed to take care of their people then what do you say about millions of NRIs who are living abroad.
what is your definition of outsider?
Also regarding delhi , it has created twin cities like gurgaon, farudabad, ghaziabad, noida to decongest the capital but what has mumbai done.
we can go on arguments like this , i just wanted to make one point that just blaming people from other state does not help, there are so many cities in world where immigration happens in large scale but they have managed it - new york is one example.

NY does not allow uncontrolled migration . they issue visas to select qualified individuals, and not to every tom-dick-and-harry.
mumbai unfortunately does not have the same luxury of choosing among migrants.

you sound more like an IGNORANT LOSER than a hardcore Marathi patriot
You don't need a visa to goto NY from other states. You only need a job. Don't make comments about NY sitting in a slum in Mumbai.

Marathis are just lazy asses and that's why all the brainy ppl like the Tamils came to Mumbai and excelled. Sure the Tamils came as labourers too but how can they be blamed if the Marathis are lazy mooning their arses and hesitate to do hard labour. Mumbai would be just like Patna if its not for the cosmopolitan environment there which attracted the best of India to the city.

stop being a whiner

If Tamils were such great branies and hard workers why did they not develop TamilNadu itself ? Nobody invited them to Mumbai. The root problem is that, all the Tamilian brainis supported people like Jaylalita and she spent all your tax money to buy her shooes and saries instead of investing For infrastructure in Tamilnadu.Thats why Tamilians had to come to Mumbai.

friends.. please stop this arguments about marathis or tamils , only point i wanted to make to all maharashtrians that Mumbai is not their private property , it belongs to the country and everyone has a right to live there no matter from where he comes. we should think how to handle these situations instead of fighting over communities.
everyone feels bad if someone abuses their communities , even marathis should understand this and stop blaming people from other states to be responsible for Mumbai condition.
