What about Dual-Citizenship
by Vinayak Patil on Apr 26, 2007 06:25 PM   Permalink

what government is doing for NRIs to help them in other countries?
NRIs help indian economy by advocating outsourcing to India wherever & whenever possible.
NRIs the one who invested first in Indian stocks from foreign land. Not to mention remittances done by them to their families in India.

Most of these NRIs are leaving indian citizenship to acquire foreign citizenship because Indian government's policy of non-dual citizenship.

NRIs who have resident status in other countries for example US & UK are facing increasing pressure from those governments. Only way they can get equal status in those countries is by acquiring citizenship of those countries. Apprantely they (other countries) do not have problem with dual-citizenship but Indian government insist on scrapping Indian passport before acquiring other citizenship.

All developed countries allow dual citizenship. They are proud of citizenship they offer to their residents.

PM Singh promised about dual-citizenship but it did not realise. The problem started when they made whole matter complicated by combining NRIs with overseas Indians. NRI: Non-Resident-Indian (who holds indian passport). Overseas Indian: who is Indian by race but holds non-Indian passport.

Need of an hour is to allow NRIs to acquire foreign passport at the same time maintaining their Indian citizenship. This will allow them level playing field in the countries where they are living at the same time it will satisfy emotional need to be recognised as Indian.

As far as allocating Indian passport to overseas Indians is concerned, that is not a priority. They are not in a hurry at this moment. OCIO certificate provides everything they need at this moment.

Our beurocrats over complicated the whole dual-citizenship issue by combining two different things. Which resulted into failure.

Can they wake up to the fact and take this as priority?
