Walmart... should be allowed but on one condition..
by anand s gagrani on Apr 23, 2007 08:44 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Walmart should be allowed as they would bring a drastic change in the business practices of traders who were taking indian consumers for a ride till now. However government must make a rule that for first 5 years the store should source 80% of its goods from India. In this way our own market would become mature and strong enough to defend / excel and compete with global giants without sacrificing small traders.
Let everyone enjoy fruits of Global market and fair trade.

What is wrong with you, why do you think that whatever Wal-Mart would be doing in India cant be done by Indian entrepreneurs. Why do you think that Tatas entering retail business and selling locally produced goods is better than Wal-Mart selling Chinese goods, may it be only for 5 years as you suggest. All local traders should be asked to merge into an Indian retail concept which can be very unique. There is no need for any Wal-Mart to do this. Now you may say that India doesn't have any logistics and good distribution skills in retail, but my friend you need to understand that no one in this business had those skills. There was a time when vegetables used to be sold in streets in America. India can devise its own methods and ways which will give local manufacturers and store owners their value for money. Indians have smart business skills ( remember thats the advantage over our Chinese counterparts ), so why not put them to use and do things on our own rather than taking help from a shrewd capitalist retail stores who dont care about anything, except profits. It amy take time but it will have much longer benefits.

I do understand ur concerns and agree with you. Dont you think Tatas and Reliance are already getting in this business but they are small as compared to global giant. They need some time to stand tall and mature. i am sure that they better understand indian mentality and combined with the learnings they would get from global giant they would be in a better position to serve indian people.

But thats what the point is: we dont want to learn from this Wal-Mart. We want to do it by ourselves, doesn't matter if it takes more time but it will be self earned. Who knows that a few decades down the future, Reliance or Tata retail business will be as big as Wal-Mart. Also, we the people of India would be the ones making our local entrepeuners, they would be someone just like us and hence will understand us much better rather than some multinational corporation. As for expertise, there is a reason why it is called as "expertise" as it comes from experience. You are saying not to do ourselves and just go and get it from someone, that should not happen. I am not against globalization and liberalization but I would never support Wal-Mart coming into India ever.
