Drunken Driving:
by M. Shankar on Jun 16, 2008 05:16 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Mostly it is the "maldar bap ka beta"s indulging in this crazy pastime. Basically, lazy and spoilt guys, with easy money to throw around. Normally, they have a couple or more girls clinging to them, and what better way to impress them? The guys and girls are usually headstrong, high class loafers. Need to be "Macho", because they have seen the heroes in films and TV serials such Macho guys driving around crazy, with booze in one hand and a blonde on the other! In great, spanking new cars! Speed is the thrill. If it runs over and kills a few poor sleeping on the platforms, well, no sweat, they can get around, the dads and chachas and the moolas are there! Haven't the top heroes also done it?

Tell you what, if recklessness is obvious, put such offenders straight behind bars. Make it minimum 5 years inside. Impound vehicle. Cancel licence. Impose hefty fines: Rs. 20 lakhs for loss of a life, Rs. 15 lakhs for causing injury. And give Police the absolute authority -no interference from top figures!

It would be wrong to stereotype these offenders. I've seen plenty of youngsters from middle class families indulge in the same activities.

And whatever made you think its the 'impress girls' thing ?! Speed thrills (and kills of course). A lot of guys do it just for the fun - for the 'cool' factor - and it doesn't have anything to do with girls. Its just that these guys are not mature enough to know where to draw the line in terms of speed.

Well, I'm not generalizing - said it just to illustrate a point that this kind of crime goes with booze, cheap thrills, and sex, like we see in some serials/films -not that every time that has to be the case. We have even heard to under-aged boys driving out the dad's car and bashing them.
