good article

kudos to rashmi for this article. it had been a while that i saw one from her on rediff.

i agree with all the points that she has made.

I guess one primary area that she missed is the justification for creating new IITs and IIMs. Most of the IITs coming up would be refurbishment of some of existing colleges. Why cant these colleges have a brand image of their own ? Why do they want to dilute the IIT/IIM brand name that has been built over the years ?

I can say that IIT/IIM status does give you govt funding. If parting with money is the only issue, I am sure you dont need to name an institute IIT or IIM. If govt has good gestures, it would help out a bright institute anyways.

And for those IITs and IIMs that are not going to come out of refurbished institutes, I have just one thing to say ... we have a huge paucity of faculties. India only produces a chemical engineer who later on works for Infosys. We do not produce PhDs.

and finally, if the economy is poor, printing more currency notes is not going to make things better.

thanks
