Yoga after Disc propalse and surgery
by KALYAN MITRA on Jul 24, 2007 11:11 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Hi Shameem,
I am 38 years of age, male, software professional. I had disc prolapse last year in L4-L5 and L5-S1, and had a surgery on L4-L5.

I would like to go for Yoga, keeping in mind that I had already surgery in one level and have a small prolapse in another level.

Is it possbile? Can I meet your personally and take some classes?

Regards

Kalyan Mitra

Kalyanji I am based in Kandivli, Mumbai. I suggest you check out a yoga teacher closer to your home, since that would be practical and help you in sustaining your fitness regimen longterm. Your question, would yoga help? Yes, yoga will help in strengthening the surrounding muscles, and the legs, tightening the abdomen so the load is taken off the spine. And your yoga chart should be designed with this mind. Remember doing yoga is not just about poses: it's pranayamas are also very powerful healing practices, and in your case, you can start with some simple ones, like belly-breathing, nadi shodhana, bhramari. In any follow-up therapy, as in your case, it is crucial to strengthen the surrounding/supportive weight-bearers... So, yoga would be a good bet, also because on a more subtle level it helps with nutrient absorption (needed for fast repair of any damage), and pranayama (helps with de-stress, since a relaxed mind is also crucial for healing). I suggest however that you choose a yoga therapist. And also request for one-to-one sessions. Joining a general or a group session (even in therapy) would not guarantee individual attention which your case warrants. My blog http://jaisivananda.blogspot.com has addresses from Mumbai, and some from India -- am trying to compile a directory of sorts..you can check back with me about any further clarification, once your start your sadhana, either here, or at my email sama_yama@yahoo.co.in. If contacting an institute you can also ask

them for a list of their teachers who do home visits. Another good bet would be to refer back to your spine expert involved with your surgery, and ask him to recommend a good physiotherapist for your rehab prog. Since most physiotherapy is yoga-based, you will be on very safe turf here. Once this is in place, you can think about your pranayama class...
