Medical Insurance for international students is a must (mandatory) in most of the universities in US. Atleast in my school (Temple University) I know it for sure. It's included in your tuition bill. The cost varies depending upon your location in the US.

You are right in saying that health insurance is must in US. We provide health insurance through ICICI Lombard, which is cheaper & features all covers that are mandatry in US university's.
