Its nice to know that your relationship went very well with your sisters. May be world has a name for them " step sisters" but then isn't it true that sometime real siblings have greater aimosity then the step ones?
But in any case one should be always protective about their family never matter even if they are wrong and I feel bad b'coz you were unable to defend your relationship though people were wrong.
