What a joke! And you can't blame the airlines ...
by Aravind Nair on Sep 09, 2004 08:03 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Comparison:

Flying distance from B'lore to Pune: approx 700 Kms. The cheapest one-way fare is Rs.2,345 as given in the article, so two-way can be taken as Rs.4,690.

Flying distance from S'pore to Phuket (Thailand): 959 Kms. You can book a TWO-way ticket 7 days in advance for just SGD88 (Rs.2,300 approx.). And that is not on a budget airline but on a regular airline.

From today's news in S'pore - a budget airline is offering one-way ticket from S'pore to Bangkok (1,425 Kms) for just S$0.59 (Rs.15 !!!)

Remember - Thailand is a developing country like India

We may have won Independence in 1947, but we as a people have not won economic FREEDOM from the "ruling class" of whatever hue and shade.

Hi Arvind,

I agree with what you have mentioned there but what you missed out on are SUPER HIGH taxes imposed by our Govt. Ex. Landing, Parking and other facilities in India is more expensive vs the places you mentioned. Fuel is taxed and is cheaper in Asean countries. Over and above this - Airline has to pay more in order to get an Aircraft in India (rupee - dollar conflict adds insult to injury). This does not stop here; one has to pay through the nose for Engineering & maintenance (big contribution to costs).

Looking at all this I think we should appreciate what various Airlines are trying to do.

If you have to heir a A/C car it will cost you 7-8 rupees / kilometer whereas you can fly from Mumbai to Delhi for just 3.2 rupees (under Apex) & also as low as 1.1 rupee per kilometer with a low cost guy if you are lucky.

We are, very fast approaching an era where cost of Air travel will be lower than cost of transportation to / from the Airport.

Cheers - Anil
