Call centers are a reality
by Amar on Oct 26, 2005 05:34 PM   Permalink

I dont think the generalization of poor work environment/policies in call centers is correct. Most people who join call centers are fresh out of college. They have never worked before. I have grown up with this industry. I have also seen the work culture / health hazards in the other industries and there are half as many health hazards in the call center environment as compared to the manufacturing side. I agree there is pressure and stress, but then compare a call center executive to his counterpart in any other industry in India....what is the remuneration there? Compare the job of a cards tele sales exective to that of a field sales executive in India and the call center job will appear so much more cozy. Outside our public sector, life is very competitive and stressful in most industries. I anyways do not favour the idea of labour unions, we can see what they have done to the quality f labour...its common sense, why do most people work hard! to grow or to retain the job..the moment you bring in job security, unions, etc. the quality of labour will go down (at least in the indian scenario). why are we hearing so much resentment from kolkata n not delhi or banglr..red flag DNA :)
