When Brown came to India he had to simply please the Indian public. so he said that is a good contender for knighthood. He also added that he is not the person to announce knighthood.

The citizens of a repubic cannot be knighted, because the status of all the citizens in a republic is same otherwise Gavaskar and many other Indians would have been knighted.

Citizens of a Common Wealth can be knighted, which India is. Salman Rushdie was knighted last year similarly. Anyways, Gordon Brown has just given his personal thought not the opinion of the knighthood committee. Bharet Ratna Shri Sachin Tendulkar sounds very much appeasing to my ears rather than Sir Sachin Tendulkar.

If he does not know, it is his bad luck and lack of knowledge of current affairs. By the way, the type of education about world, these guys are taught, it is most likely that he doesnot know even about India.
