For a long time, I also felt that Mohinder Amarnath's famous words (selectors are a bunch of jokers) are very correct.

But on second thoughts and introspection, we cannot really heap the entire blame on selectors, administrators etc.

Look at the way Kapil Dev emerged as a leading fast bowler / allrounder. Look at the way Vishwanath, Gavaskar etc. batted. Look at the way Dravid, Laxman etc have come up with their batting. Most importantly, look at the way Anil Kumble has set a magnificent benchmark for the performance of a bowler - playing for 18 years, scalping 600 batsmen in 124 tests at a good average of 5 wickets per match played.

These players have become legends by sheer hardwork and singleminded, dedicated efforts DESPITE the system or lack of it.

In the Adelaide test starting tomorrow, I would like Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly to score big runs at a healthy strike rate and help the team win, forgetting totally their omission from ODI side. This will be the best way of replying to the selectors and whoever else wanted them out of the ODI side. On the contrary expressing disgust, displaying a lack of spirit or enthusiasm, feeling down and out will neither help the players to gain entry to ODI side, nor encourage selectors to retain them in the test side.

As the saying goes, the tough get going when the going gets tough.
