Can somebody explain the racism angle?
by Ramkishore S on Oct 18, 2007 12:16 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Okay, so Symonds was called a monkey and people imitated monkey antics when he was near. It certainly is offensive and "not cricket", even if Symonds does look more like a gorilla than most gorillas do. But how does that make these comments racist? Like Inzamam is called Aloo, and Ramesh Powar a lot more imaginative stuff. So?

Calling a person with African heritage a monkey takes us back to the 18th century when the africans were abused by their slave masters and one of the common abuse was calling them apes or monkeys. Just we think slavery is a ghost of the past, if such taunts surface up again it is indeed very sad!

It is perhaps more out of ignorance and no racist intent is involved in such comments, atleast I hope. But in such a sensitive issue, ignorance is not an excuse.

Yeah okay. Now I get it. The taunt is seen as racist because he is of aborigine origin?

You are not a Rebel. You sing for Australians. If you are an Indian I find it that it is difficult for you to come out of the mindset of being suborinate to the Whites which is in born with you from the Britsh time in India. If you are not an Indian you are unable to accept that Indians too can do anything as good or better than the Whites whether it is in games or racial taunts/chants.

I was serious in wanting to know the racism angle to the taunt. "Coolie" etc. is a derogatory throwback to the colonial professions of Indians. But why is monkey being seen as a racist taunt? Like if Ramesh Powar were to be called a sack of coal whether in India or Australia, it cannot be a racist taunt but merely an accurate (even if distasteful) description of him.

Racist taunt is precisely such name calling based on the colour of the skin or basing upon a generalisation like coolie.

Just imagine what goes thru the mind of a person who does such name calling. He only sees the skin colour and makes a quick judgement of his race or ethnicity. The only thing they can then think of is a comment like Coolie or Monkey. Now how is that not racist. They have not cared to look beyond the skin colour or race.

When I watch cricket that's in India and the camera shows the crowd I often think they look like monkeys. Hairy, dirty little children wearing loincloth clothes climbing trees and abandoned buildings to get a look at the stadium. They look exactly like a pack of monkeys, yet when I say it my girlfriend says I'm racist! It's stupid

Chris, Cool down. Its a kwon fact that Indian "Males" are being immigrated freely to Aus for years just to maintain and incraese the population level in Aus.

Its because Aus is flooded with lots of "Chrises".

I'm perfectly chill sir, though I am not of Indian descent. Yes many Indians (not just males) are and have immigrated to Australia, because well... why not? And yes Australia is flooded with alot of Indians or Australians of Indian descent, they come here for the better standard of life, which proves true, which in turn attracts more as the news spreads. What's your point?
