Match Referee is right
by Shashi Dharan on Nov 19, 2007 03:55 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

I feel that the referee's decision is right. The umpire felt convinced that the ball had touched the glove and gave Yuvraj out. As a player, Yuvi should have walked away right off. What did he think? Did he think that if he stands for some time and shows his shoulder, he will be recalled? He has been playing for so long, he should know that he has to go. Standing there and creating a needless controversy and pressure for the umpire was not required. Frankly, watching the game, I have so many times felt on first watching that several of the appeals are out. It is only on 3 or 4 slow-motion viewings that I understand that most are not out. Umpiring is tough. We eat channa, nuts and sit in the living room watching slow-motion relays and criticise the poor umpires. Another point is that noone blames the fielding side for appealing the hell loose and getting a verdict (undeserving) in their favour. We forgot that Umar Gul and the wicket-keeper jumped to the skies appealing and celebrated. It is only the umpire who is blamed.

I think the current rule has to be changed in such a way that if the on field umpire has given a wrong decision then the third umpire should intervine with the on filed umpire and ask him to correct the decision thus we will have more matches with meaningful results.
