The Virendar Sehwag Conundrum
by prash k on Feb 14, 2007 01:09 PM   Permalink

Viru must be the one of the luckiest players around. There can%u2019t be no doubts about it. I cant remember any other player being given the run he has been given despite his lack of success or even apparent lack of commitment.

Having said that it would have been hard to see him not selected for the tournament. He always carries an X factor in his batting and I guess that is what has forced the selectors hand. The kind of tempting possibility that the day he comes good, he can turn the match on its head single handedly. But the way his case has been handled makes the whole scenario very laughable.

After the SA debacle, Vengsarkar announcing his dropping him from the side, announced, %u201Che has to sort out his cricket, his batting basically%u201D. The predictable obviousness of the statement apart, what did he exactly mean by that?

That he has to go back to some lower level of cricket, and get his technique worked out?

There was hardly any opportunities for sehwag to do that, and here he is selected again despite any convincing performances or even chances to get anything proven outside of the international games

Now if he was going to be part of the WC plans anyway, why wasn%u2019t he picked for the WI series, wouldn%u2019t that helped him iron out his chinks before the world cup?

Or was the think tank considering the West Indies series more important than the world cup?

Or where they hiding him from any more failures before they can announce the squad?

Now he may prove all of us wrong and go out and get a good score today, but that doesn%u2019t mean that all cricket logic has been defied in the way his case was handled.

May be it is time we look at players like what they are, professional players and not like icons like they are made out to be.

And then may be we can expect a selection panel that makes it decisions based on sound logic and not emotions%u2026
