The problem is not with Cricket or cricketers. India simply does not produce sportsmen. Blame it on our physical constitution, and lack of infrastructure even at the district levels, if not village level.
It is with great difficulty our cricketers do one thing, bat or bowl. Asking them to field properly is like asking too many favours out of them, and finally if you ask the bowlers to learn to bat consistently, they will stop bowling and start considering themselves as the next best batsman after Bradman!
Simply put, Indian players just do one or two things well, and forget the rest. Gundappa Vishwanath only knew batting and even in that the only thing he knew was how to square cut. It was great going for him till the time a quickie like imran khan came into the scene, after which the only thing gundappa used to do like a joker, was to square cut after the ball had reached the gloves of the keeper!
Or for that matter Venkatesh prasad. The only thing he knew was bowling, and the only thing in bowling was the leg cutter and off cutter. It was great going for him as well, with some bakras like Gary kirsten and Aamir sohail, just made for getting out to his form of bowling, but finally most players and primarily the aussies figured out that the only thing you needed to do for Prasad's bowling was to stand a wee bit ahead of the stumps and negate the cutters he bowled. He neither had the pace nor the brains to counter this strategy, and he soon faded.
With these kind of dud players, as our legacy, how the heck could we win any thing in world cricket? Mind you, I have not yet spoken about glorious players of the past like " Venkatapathy Raju(Muscles)" "Chetan Sharma" ...
