Chappell's main problem is he wanted to create a team which can win the 2011 world cup. when you come second in 2003, you plan to win the next one, not the one after. In his quest for an illusive 2011 - I am not sure whether he was trying to extend his own job tenure, or letting Australia a walk over - he systematically destroyed a structure that was, indeed, working. For all your theories, someone has to answer why a team gets booted in Round 1 when they were runners up last time around.
