As you said there should be some way out. If some party denies tickets to politicians, they contest as independents and win. Similarly, if some capable player is denied a birth in sports events like this, subject to self-financing (through some corporates, etc.) they should be allowed to participate on their own. Once they win, the country will know their worth and the selectors will be sent to thrash. International Olympic Association should think on these lines too.
