It is a real tragedy that the political parties without exception have hijacked a noble concept which was put forward for reserving some educational & job opportunities for the economically, educationally & socially backward groups of people. It was meant to be a temporary phase of positive discrimination for a certain number of years to act as a palliative for centuries of discrimination. It was assumed in good faith that these measures would lead to economic development which would ultimately wipe out backwardness in education and hence prevent exploitation at the hands of the better off. But sadly, the cynical approach of the politicians has now led to competition among communities to be labelled BACKWARD. This helped these so called LEADERS to carve out captive vote banks! The current agitation is also the same. No community should be allowed to hold entire society to ransom. They must be dealt with an iron hand. Also reservations should be capped at the 50% limit as ordered by the Supreme Court. If at all any tinkering needs to be done, why does the Govt not include a 10% reservation (from within the 50% already set)for children of mixed caste or mixed community parentage. That could be a good step towards a casteless society.
