Why Indian poor remain poor
by Sharad on May 02, 2008 11:22 PM

As many have pointed out, there are two key reasons Indian poor have remained poor.

Fatalism and Tolerance (due to our passive religion and culture), which are the virtues of our harmonious society (despite such poverty, the society is still civil and not erupting into violence), are also a SIGNIFICANT CAUSE for lack of vision and development in our society.

Our CHALTA HAI attitude causes us to be tolerant towards our enemies (both within - read corrupt and criminal people - and outside of our country.

Our CHALTA HAI attitude does not let us take charge of our destiny in our own hands and SCIENTIFICALLY DEVELOP our society.

Our CHALTA HAI attitude also causes us not to be CIVIC MINDED and ENGAGE IN THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Though these are strengths in adverse times, they are also our biggest stumbling blocks. The poor are taken advantage of, and they believe they do not have right to ASSERT THEMSELVES. Though our constitution affords us equal rights, the POOR DO NOT BELIEVE THEY HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS and they are not aware of such a thing as our CONSTITUTION. They do not FULL COMPREHEND the structure of a political society.

It is due to this passive culture, we work in a CONSERVATION MODE all the time (we make do with what we have) instead of working in a DEVELOPMENT MODE (produce more to get rid of the scarcity).

We need to get more assertive as a people and work together.
