Dear Sesh, we are now talking with the benfit of hindslight. Though I am not a fan of Mr.Nehru, a fair assessment is that he had acted in good faith for the benefit of the citizens of our country. We all should remember that our country was under alien occupation and our industrialists were in no position to invest billions of rupees at that time. It was only the Central Govt which could have invested in large steel plants, dams, etc.
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia who always contested against Nehru had said that "I am not contesting elections to win but to see how many votes are cast against Nehru" and one occassion he had even said that "Nehru is nothing but a zero". There was no political party worth its name in India for a long time after independence and the Marxists (led by the late AKG) with just 25 MPs were the largest oppostion. So the Congress party was able to steam-roll their agenda. The Licence-permit raj was the biggest cause for the drag in developement of our country.
