what you are referring is to former USSR. that's long gone. its because of the obvious reasons like Cold War and its economy. look at the present Russia now. it is much better and super strong. if you read about Chinese they depend so much on Russians. mostly for energy and defense.
now interesting angle is try to imagine what if Russia and China become best buddies? EU is almost dependent on Russia for its energy requirements. Russia kicked out Saudi Arabia few years back to become largest exporter of Oil and Gas in the world. its obvious that Russia will have closer ties with China and EU. now can you imagine where does US and India would fit into in in such a multi polar world? give it a try.
