Today something very terrible has happned at the Indian Parliament. Three BJP MPs came to the well of the House and displayed wads of currency notes allegedly received for abstaining from the vote of confidence. We all knew that intense wheeling and dealing to save or bring down the Central Government was feverishly on for the past few weeks in the capital. Support from non-descript political parties and independent candidates had suddenly became crucial. They were openly wielding their wish list for extending the support. To pacify some grumblers Cabinet berth was also assured. Allegations and counter-allegations of 'horse trading' were being traded. Honourable (Tainted) MPs who till yesterday were lodged in various jails were released to participate in the vote of confidence. But the morals of Indian politics will plummet to such low levels was beyond the imagination of anyone. It a sad day for Indian democracy. The real issue, whether the N-deal is good for the country has now been lost under the cacophony of 'realpolitik'. No party has spared any efforts, whether moral or otherwise, to garner support. After six decades of our experimentation with parliamentary democracy, is this all we have achieved? Where we openly solicit support from parties and tainted politicians for whom the N-deal is mere an opportunity to garner positions and rake in moolah. These are modern day "Bharat's Bhagya Vidhata", who decide on our destiny.
