If we are serious about addressing these issues as oppose to name-calling and mud slinging, we must take a harder look at the power structure in our country. This will take us back to our constitution.
With all due respect to Dr. Ambedkar, our constitution is a reflection of the parliamentary system in Great Britain. This system worked well with the British (Apart from the challenges with the IRA) and is still working well for them. The reasons are very obvious as listed below.
- Total population is 60 Million - 90% is white - One predominant language, English
Compare this with India. We have a population of 1.2 Billion people. We have diversity in languages and cultures. With a parliamentary system of democracy we have people from certain areas of the country govern people from other states. Hence people from these states feel disfranchised.
This will be a growing problem in the future.
The solution is difficult but necessary. We need to transition from a parliamentary form of democracy to a presidential form of democracy. This way people will have more say in their state governments.
- We need to give more powers to the state government - Let states have their own constitution and laws - The central government should be responsible for National security, international trade policies, etc
