To meet the grwoing demand of power, thermal power plants are being built throughout the world. One tonne of coal burnt in power plant produces about 3.5 t of carbon dioxide, which is let into atmosphere. 4 million tonnes of coal is required to be burnt per year to produce 500 mw power. Imagine 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide going to atmosphere by 500 mw plant alone. our power requirement is more than 400,000 MW. All these gases are crating what is called green-house effect and increasing the earth temperature. If we produce electricity by Nuclear Plants, carbon di-oxide generation is zero. Regarding radations more uranium and radiactive substances are let into atmosphere by coal burning (though it in traces but the magnitude of caol burnt is so hogh that it becomes a substantial amount) than nuclear power plant. India will earn billions by carbon credits if they go for nuclear power plant. This earth will be saved by green house effect. Moreever efficeincy of power generation by coal is hardly 36 %. Then there is enormous problem of flyash disposal. One t of coal produces around250 kg of FLy Ash. This is eroding the soil fertility. By burning coal in power plants , the earth temperature ha increased by 1.5 deg c in last 50 years whereas the same remained more or less stable for last thousand years. As an engineer I appeal to all concerened to see reason behind the deal and support it not only for India but for the survival of human race on this eartn Jai Hind.
