US has lot of land that is not being used for cultivation and istead farmers are paid not to grow. That id not the case with India. India became a power only because it became self sufficient in food (whatever little) and did not need to import. USSR crumbled because of lack of food.
US did not increase its nuclear energy because of environmentalists, but it is restarting nuclear energy.
