The climax came on May 18, 1974 when Indian scientists exploded a nuclear device at Pokhran in Rajasthan. India became the sixth country to join the nuclear club after US, Russia, UK, France and China. China was the fifth member in the club, joined in 1964. The existing four members could not do anything to stop China in the advancement. Then why should India is stopped to join the nuclear group? I bow my head to the Great son of India, Homi Jehangir Bhabha who relentlessly worked for taking India to the NUCLEAR CLUB. I described the whole story in such detail to let us be aware of the contributions made by eminent scientists.
We have to take a look at the conditions during the cold war period. At the end of the Second World War, the United States had a monopoly on the atomic bomb and attempted to hold on to it as long as possible. Expecting the possibility of nuclear blackmail, the Soviet Union vigorously pursued the development of its own nuclear capacities. In August 1949 the Soviets unexpectedly detonated an atomic bomb. From that moment on the United States could not use nuclear weapons as instrument of offensive warfare. contd
