Sorry, but your statment is incorrect. The US is still planning more nuclear reactors at home. Even last year (2007), applications have been filed for building new nuclear reactors there (Eg. South Texas Project).
Intially, the US which is the largest producer of commercial nuclear power in the world had OVERESTIMATED its own requirements. In 1960, they estimated 1000 reactors by year 2000 but there are only 104 functional reactors now. A lot of orders had to be cancelled and some had to be stopped after the installation.
