RE:N-deal
by PKN on Jul 04, 2008 10:54 PM

Bhaskaran,
The political maze in the country is too complicated for such a simple solution . The N-deal does not need to be approved by the parliament. The government can go ahead and sign the same as long as it is not a minority government.
The left knows the embarrasment of supporting a No confidence motion that was moved by the BJP. So that is an option they will dread . There is a good possiblity that the BJP will not bring a no confidence motion .
The Congress would them rule as minority government since the oppostion has not opted to prove that in the parliament .
Bardhan has therefore come up with an idea by which the Left can have its cake and eat it too.
They will give a letter to the Preisdent of India withdrawing their support . The President would then ask the Government to prove its majority . On the motion of confidence the Left would vote against the motion along with the BJP.
Bardhan thinks he has an ace up his sleeves . But I dont think he has factored in that Sonia also has an ace up hers . Pratiba Patil may be obliged to return the favor that 10 Janpath did her by making her the President .
The left may end up not having a ake to eat after all ....
