Congress has used adversity as also an opportunity. It has broadened its coalition by including JDS (Karnataka, SP & RLD (UP) and Triminol Congress (West Bengal). How important these alliances are exemplified in Karnataka. The BJP is poised to lose as much as 18 seats in Karnataka. This is because a Congress-JDS alliance has 55%. A Congress-TMC alliance will reduce the Left to have its present seats in West Bengal. A SP-Congress-RLD alliance will give the UPA an extra 30 seats. Since SP contests outside UP, cutting into Congress vote share, this increases Congress vote share in many as 8 states.
