The Naxalite Problem is both a political and an economic one. The problem has manifested in the rural youth, unemployed and unskilled for a modern economy taking to the path of wanton destruction as a means to expend their energy and vent their frustration at their economic condition. This feeling is not restricted to a small area but has now spread to vast areas so that now it has assumed menacing proportions. The national political leadership is wanting and the local rural politicians sidelined or for the most part play truant. These people have left it to the bureaucracy to tackle the situation as best as it can. The Gvernment servants can hardly substitute for a robust political processes in these backward regions, so it does the next best thing: pass it to the paramilitary forces to stamp out the menace. This kind of ping pong is not going to work. The problem will be solved only if the politicians wean away the youth of these areas into contructive and gainful economic activity actively backed by the state. With our pusillanimous leadership no end seems to be in sight. These leaders fervently believe that problem will solve by itself once development takes over.
